AMERICA LATINA ►Miguel Bonasso fue peronista, montonero y fundador del Partido por la Revolución Democrática. En 2003 llegó al parlamento argentino y Néstor Kirchner, con quien le unía una estrecha amistad al igual que con la actual presidenta, le ofreció la Presidencia de la Comisión de Recursos Naturales y Conservación del Ambiente Humano, cargo que ocupó hasta diciembre pasado. Desde allí promovió la defensa de los intereses del medioambiente, a través de la ley de bosques y de la ley de glaciares, que fue vetada por la presidenta Fernández.

Bonasso no es sólo un político, sino un conocido periodista y escritor. Como periodista fue uno de los fundadores del diario La Opinión y del diario Noticias. Entre sus publicaciones destacan la novela Recuerdo de la muerte y la biografía sobre Héctor Cámpora, El presidente que no fue, uno de los libros preferidos de Máximo Kirchner, fundador de La Cámpora, agrupación de jóvenes kirchneristas con gran presencia en el nuevo Parlamento.

Su nuevo libro, El Mal: el modelo K y la Barrick Gold, fue publicado por Planeta Argentina y ya ha vendido treinta mil ejemplares. Ya está a la venta en Chile y la “gran prensa” lo ha ignorado. En él mezcla el thriller con la investigación de una de las mineras más grande del mundo, pero también analiza las figuras políticas con las que Barrick ha hecho alianzas: en Argentina con conocidos violadores de los derechos humanos, como Rubén Bufano y otros, que apoyaron a la dictadura y que hoy son “blancas palomas” del Frente para la Victoria (FPV) -la coalición de gobierno-, como el gobernador de San Juan, José Luis Gioja.

Pero además, en su libro acusa a los ex presidentes de Argentina y Chile, Carlos Menem y Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, de haber “vendido” territorio a la Barrick, a través de un tratado en el que ambos países cedieron soberanía territorial a la empresa canadiense dirigida por Peter Munk (Chile un 25% de territorio y Argentina un 6%). Por otro lado, defiende al ex senador chileno Jorge Lavandero, convencido de que detrás de su proceso y encarcelamiento estuvo la Barrick Gold.

Con las inquietudes que nos generó la lectura de su libro, conversamos con Miguel Bonasso en su casa de Palermo, una tarde extraña, con lluvia, ¡en verano!

Este libro tiene partes noveladas al comienzo, en donde se ve a Peter Munk, el mandamás de Barrick Gold, en su oficina, observando el paisaje, pero luego deriva a la investigación y a la denuncia y sigue con una crónica muy personal sobre tu participación en la historia política de Argentina. Todo muy bien mezclado con datos duros, impresiones y deducciones.

“Este libro vino a cumplir varias funciones. Una fue terminar con mi vida política partidaria, que tuvo dos mandatos muy complicados en la Presidencia de la Comisión de Recursos Naturales y Conservación del Ambiente Humano. Aunque en los últimos tres años se hizo más difícil por el veto de la presidenta a la ley de glaciares. A partir del veto, hubo una distancia mayor entre el gobierno, la presidenta, y mi persona. En este sentido quiero decir que el kirchnerismo ha provocado una división muy grande en el pensamiento de Izquierda, porque hoy se descalifica a cualquier crítico, a toda disidencia, y para ello están programas como 678 (de la Televisión Pública), que funciona inspirado por un estalinismo subterráneo. Uno no es de derecha porque sea crítico de este gobierno”.

¿Crees que el kirchnerismo ha sido injusto contigo?

“Es interesante ver cómo los distintos modelos le hacen el juego al imperio. Al imperio no le preocupa que el gobierno de un país tenga un discurso progresista si le permite, en la práctica, el saqueo de sus recursos naturales”.

Una especie de progresismo imperialista…

“Exactamente. Pino Solanas (cineasta y líder de Proyecto Sur) y yo parecemos ante cierta opinión pública como de derecha, cuando en verdad la derecha está mucho más cerca del gobierno y de la presidenta”.

Cosas turbias

En tu libro cuentas cómo se hizo la fortuna de Peter Munk, desde que tenía una pequeña empresa de tocadiscos, luego de aparatos de televisión, su fracaso, etc. Y repentinamente, aparece vinculado a la minería, con un socio (Adnar Khashoggi) que era un conocido traficante de armas, implicado en muchas cosas turbias.

 ¿Cómo llegaste a estos datos y cómo nadie reparó en ellos antes?

“Esos datos los he tomado de las propias fuentes, que son en gran medida ellos mismos. Peter Munk ha mandado a hacer dos biografías autorizadas, y me fijé con atención en ellas y en las revelaciones más importantes, como que en un comienzo Munk fue el testaferro de Kha-shoggi y participó en una estafa que él mismo reconoce de una manera edulcorada. Todo lo que puse está en esas biografías. Y el otro dato duro o comprometedor aparece en las audiencias del Congreso de Estados Unidos para el caso Irán-contras, en donde se establece que Barrick Gold puso diez millones de dólares. Aunque a decir verdad mi primer hallazgo vino del otro lado, de Alex Constantine, que dijo que Barrick era una fachada de la CIA. Eso me llevó a confirmar su acusación por otras vías. Inicialmente, cuando iba a los canales de TV de aquí con este libro, la empresa mandaba comunicados. Entonces los invité a debatir públicamente, con ciento setenta pruebas y documentos que poseo, muchos de los cuales fueron ‘proporcionados’ por la misma empresa”.

Hay un vínculo que estableces entre los violadores de los derechos humanos y la Barrick, como si los asesinos y torturadores hubieran sufrido una especie de “convertibilidad laboral”.

¿Cómo es eso?

“Eso se llama Rubén Osvaldo Bufano, que secuestró, torturó e hizo desaparecer a Haroldo Conti, un escritor admirado por Julio Cortázar. Y no sólo eso, sino que además está acusado de haber participado en la ‘masacre de Fátima’. Bueno, este hombre se pasea tranquilamente por San Juan bajo la protección del gobernador José Luis Gioja. Ese es ‘el mal’, la perversión de la que hablo en el libro. Me gustaría que Estela Carlotto, de Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, le preguntara a Gioja qué hace Bufano trabajando para Barrick Gold. Lo que me da bronca es que se haya utilizado la causa de los derechos humanos para cubrir la ‘mercancía’. Por si no lo sabes, Gioja ha puesto dinero para un documental sobre Estela Carlotto”.

¿Pero cuál es la vinculación exacta entre los Gioja y la Barrick?

“El gobernador tenía con su hermano una empresa y declararon orgullosamente en su momento ser proveedores de la Barrick. Y cuando se pelearon, terminaron acusándose de haber trabajado para esa empresa. En su pelea lo estaban confesando. No hay disimulo, las cosas son abiertas, ¡descaradas! Pero ahora hay algo más grave. Si Kirchner no muere, lo más probable es que hubiera llevado a Gioja como vicepresidente, y si Kirchner, pongámosle, hubiera fallecido durante su mandato, el presidente hubiera sido Gioja”.

La CIA y George Bush

También aparece mencionada la CIA en tu libro, en diversas operaciones, y siempre hay alguien que termina haciendo negocios con Barrick, ya sea el mismo George Herbert Bush u otros. Parece sacado de una película de teorías conspirativas. Supongo que te lo han dicho.

“Lo de la CIA: queda sobradamente confirmada su participación en las audiencias del Congreso de Estados Unidos. Por encima de algunos agentes, como Félix Rodríguez (agente que detuvo y dio la orden para matar al Che Guevara), o de Khashoggi, está y siempre estuvo George Herbert Bush, que reclutó personalmente, por ejemplo, a Rodríguez para participar, entre otros ‘objetivos’, en el Plan Phoenix, que era como llamaban a lanzar prisioneros vietnamitas desde un helicóptero a la selva. Bueno, Rodríguez se sacó fotos con el Che vivo y otras con el Che muerto. Años más tarde, en el marco del Irán-contras, envió drogas a Estados Unidos, y en este caso estuvo involucrado Bush, que estuvo a punto de perder su cargo de vicepresidente. El senador John Kerry dijo a propósito de eso que el gran paladín de la lucha contra el narcoterrorismo era un narco y promotor del terrorismo”.

Da la sensación de que siempre que Barrick Gold necesitaba una ayuda aparecía ese personaje siniestro llamado Adnan Khashoggi, sobre quien, a todo esto, se podría escribir un libro. A finales de los 80 la Barrick encuentra un gran yacimiento y ahí estuvo él, ¿no?

“El que salva a la Barrick no es Khashoggi, es el ex presidente George H. Bush, quien le entrega un permiso de explotación a un costo irrisorio, diez mil dólares, para un yacimiento de diez mil millones de dólares. Este yacimiento fue el salto definitivo para que la Barrick entrara en las grandes ligas. Khashoggi sólo puso la plata”.

Chilenos involucrados

Cuando asume Bill Clinton, su nuevo secretario de Interior calificó esa patente como “el más grande robo de oro desde los tiempos de Butch Cassidy”. ¿Cómo la compañía canadiense salió del paso?

“El que apoya en ese crucial momento a la Barrick es Vernon Jordan, uno de los líderes de la comunidad afroamericana, del ala ‘progresista’ del Partido Demócrata. Es él quien modifica la política minera de Clinton y, como premio, lo incorporan a ese gran consejo asesor que presidía George H. Bush. Es el mismo consejo que incluyó también a Andrónico Luksic (ver recuadro). Vernon Jordan fue una especie de Tío Tom”.

Cuentas que Peter Munk apoyó a Augusto Pinochet y que tuvo buenas relaciones con Menem y luego con Frei Ruiz-Tagle. Bastante transversal su paladar político, ¿no?

“Munk es claramente un fascista. Un tipo que dijo que la violación en masa de mujeres en Africa era un hábito cultural. Un tipo que dice eso, no sólo es un fascista, sino un racista. Por eso él no cree en los derechos humanos y dice que para hablar de ellos, primero hay que solucionar el problema económico. En ese sentido, Pinochet para él sería lo ideológico y Frei Ruiz-Tagle lo pragmático. Digo esto porque Munk debía comportarse así para obtener el tratado binacional que crearía un territorio sobre el cual ni Argentina ni Chile poseen soberanía. Un territorio donde la policía es el guardia privado de la empresa, y que le permite operar en toda la zona de Pascua Lama. Este tercer país, el ‘país Barrick’, está formado por un 25% de territorio chileno y por 6% de territorio argentino”.

En tu libro defiendes al ex senador chileno Jorge Lavandero. ¿De dónde surge el convencimiento de su inocencia y que tras su caso estaba la Barrick?

“El único que se opone duramente a la megaminería en Chile fue Jorge Lavandero. En una charla privada con Ricardo Lagos Escobar le preguntó por el tema minero, y éste le respondió que el tema no estaba en la agenda. Bueno, y después vino el montaje que hizo Canal 13, a través de un periodista que trabajó dos años en el caso (ver recuadro). A Lavandero lo juzgaron por un delito que no cometió y le quitaron beneficios carcelarios que le correspondían. Eso al menos me dijo un jurista a quien entrevisté”.

Ultimas dudas

¿Por qué entonces señalas que el modelo K, de Cristina Fernández, es peor que el de Menem?

“El menemismo vendió lo que estaba sobre la mesa; en cambio, el kirchnerismo está vendiendo la mesa. ¡Se están vendiendo los glaciares y los preglaciares! Y el modelo K de desarrollo, ¿qué es? Simple: megaminería en la cordillera, soya con desforestación en el interior y petróleo en la Patagonia. ¡Volvemos al saqueo colonial! Si esto es progresismo, francamente no sé lo que será reaccionario”.

Finalmente, en el libro hay unos ecologistas que van a hablar con un tipo porque quieren demandar a la Barrick. La respuesta es que acaso no se dan cuenta que la industria de la minería es hermana de la industria de las armas. En este sentido, y siendo Chile un país minero y Argentina con una minería en desarrollo, ¿cómo ves el futuro de Barrick en el Cono Sur? ¿Existe la posibilidad de que, de quererlo así, la empresa ponga a un “presidente Barrick”?

“Te puedo responder por Argentina. Aquí, por ejemplo, la empresa está poniendo a gente en Mendoza, en donde la megaminería está prohibida. Ahí un abogado de uno de los staffs de abogados de la Barrick es ahora gobernador: Francisco ‘Paco’ Pérez. Y puedo apostar que hará todo lo posible para que la mageminería sea permitida. ¿Y la presidenta? Está bien, no fue puesta ahí por Barrick Gold, pero en Santa Cruz, de donde son los Kirchner, había mineras sudafricanas. Cabría preguntarse entonces si en 2003, cuando fue electo Néstor, no estaba detrás la Barrick”.

Latin AMERICA ►Miguel Bonasso was Peronist montoneros and founder of the Democratic Revolution Party. In 2003 he became the Argentine Parliament and Néstor Kirchner, with whom he linked a close friendship as well as with the current President, offered the chairmanship of the Committee of natural resources and preservation of the human environment, position he occupied until last December. From there promoted the defense of the interests of the environment, through the law on forests and law of glaciers, which was vetoed by President Fernández.

BONASSO is not only a politician, but a well-known journalist and writer. As a journalist he was one of the founders of the newspaper La Opinion and the daily news. His publications include the novel remembrance of death and the biography of Héctor Cámpora, the President who was not, one of the favorite books of maximum Kirchner, founder of La Campora, grouping of young Kirchner with a large presence in the new Parliament.

His new book, the evil: the Model K and Barrick Gold, was published by Planet Argentina and has already sold thirty thousand copies. It is already on sale at Chile and the "mainstream media" has ignored. In the mix the thriller with the research of one the world's largest mining companies, but also analyzes the political figures that Barrick has made alliances: in Argentina with known violators of human rights, as Rubén Bufano and others who supported the dictatorship and today are "white doves" of the front for victory (FPV) - the coalition Government -, as the Governor of San Juan, José Luis Gioja.

But in addition, in his book he accuses former Presidents of Argentina and Chile, Carlos Menem and Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, of having "sold" territory to Barrick, through a treaty in which both countries ceded territorial sovereignty to the Canadian company headed by Peter Munk (Chile 25% of territory and Argentina 6%). On the other hand, defends former Chilean Senator Jorge Lavandero, convinced that behind your process and imprisonment was the Barrick Gold.

With concerns that generated us the reading of his book, we talked with Miguel Bonasso at his home in Palermo, a late surprise, with rain in the summer!

This book has parts around to the beginning, where is Peter Munk, the boss of Barrick Gold, in his Office, watching the landscape, but then derives the inquiry and complaint and continues with a very personal story about your participation in the political history of Argentina. All very well mixed with hard data, prints and deductions.

"This book came to fulfil several functions." One was to finish with my partisan political life, which took two very complicated terms in the chairmanship of the Committee of natural resources and preservation of the human environment. Although in the past three years was made more difficult by the veto of the President to the law of glaciers. After the veto, there was more between the Government, the President, and my person. In this respect I would say that kirchnerism has caused a division very large in the thinking of the left, because today it disqualifies any critic, to all dissent, and in doing so are programs as 678 (of the Public Television), it will work inspired by an underground Stalinism. "One is not right because it is critical of this Government".

Kirchnerism has been unfair to you?

"It's interesting to see how the different models make the game the Empire." "The Empire not concerned that the Government of a country has a progressive discourse if allowed, in practice, the plundering of their natural resources".

A kind of imperialist PROGRESSIVISM...

"Exactly." "Pino Solanas (filmmaker and southern project leader) and I seem to some public as of right, when in truth the right is much closer to the Government and the President".

Messy things

Your book accounts how became the fortunes of Peter Munk, since she was a small company of turntables, after appliances TV, its failure, etc. And suddenly, it appears linked to mining, with a (Adnar Khashoggi) partner who was a known arms dealer implicated in many messy things.

You come to these data and how no one spared them before?

"These data the have taken from own sources, who are largely themselves." Peter Munk has been commanded to do two authorized biographies, and I noticed carefully in them and the most important revelations, at first Munk was the figurehead of Kha-shoggi and took part in a scam that he acknowledges in a sweetened way. I put everything in these biographies. And the other hard or compromising data appears in the hearings of the United States Congress in case Iran-cons, which establishes that Barrick Gold put ten million dollars. Although to tell the truth my first finding came from the other side of Alex Constantine,.

He said Barrick was a facade for the CIA. That led me to confirm his indictment in other ways. Initially, when I went to the TV channels from here with this book, the company sent press releases. "Then I invited you to discuss publicly, with 170 tests and documents I have, many of which were 'provided' by the same company".

There is a link that you establish between the violators of human rights and the Barrick, as if the killers and torturers had a sort of "labour convertibility".

How is that?

"That is called Rubén Osvaldo Bufano, who kidnapped, tortured and made disappear to Haroldo Conti, a writer admired by Julio Cortázar." And not only that, but is also accused of having participated in the 'massacre of Fatima'. Well, this man walks quietly around San Juan under the protection of the Governor José Luis Gioja. That is 'evil', the perversion of which I speak in the book. I'd like to Estela Carlotto, of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, asked Gioja Bufano what makes working for Barrick Gold. What makes me angry is that the cause of human rights has been used to cover the 'merchandise'. "If don't know you, Gioja has made money for a documentary about Estela Carlotto."

But what is the exact relationship between the Gioja and the Barrick?

"The Governor had a company with his brother and they proudly stated at the time being the Barrick providers." And when they fought, they ended up accusing of having worked for that company. In his match what they were confessing. There is no dissimulation, things are open, descaradas! But now there is something more serious. "If Kirchner does not die, chances are that it would have carried Gioja as Vice President, and whether Kirchner, put, had died during his term, the President would have been Gioja".

The CIA and George Bush

The CIA is also mentioned in your book, in various operations, and there is always someone who ends up doing business with Barrick, either George Herbert Bush himself or others. It seems taken from a film of conspiracy theories. I guess that I have told you.

"It's the CIA: is amply confirmed their participation in hearings of the Congress of United States." Above some agents, such as Félix Rodríguez (agent who stopped and gave the order to kill Che Guevara), or of Khashoggi, it is and was always George Herbert Bush, who recruited personally, for example, Rodriguez to participate, among other objectives, in the Phoenix Plan, which was called to launch Vietnamese prisoners from a helicopter into the jungle. Well, Rodriguez was pulled out photos with live Che and others with the dead Che. Years later, in the framework of the Iran-Contra, sent drugs to United States, and in this case was involved Bush, who was on the verge of losing his position as Vice President. Accounts that Peter Munk supported Augusto Pinochet and who had good relations with Menem and then with Frei Ruiz-Tagle. Quite cross your political palate, no?

"Munk is clearly a fascist." A guy who said that women in Africa mass rape was a cultural habit. A type that says that, not only is a fascist, but a racist. That is why he does not believe in human rights and said that to talk about them, you must first solve the economic problem. In that regard, Pinochet for him would be the ideological and Frei Ruiz-Tagle as pragmatic. I say this because Munk should behave as well for the binational Treaty that would create a territory over which neither Argentina nor Chile have sovereignty. A territory

 

 

 

 

Latest questions

Why then you point the K model, Cristina Fernández, worse than the Menem?

"The Menem sold what was on the table;" on the other hand, the Baldwin is selling the table. They are selling the glaciers and the preglaciares! And the K model of development, what is it? "You can answer for Argentina." Here, for example, the company is putting people in Mendoza, where the megaminería is prohibited. There a lawyer of one of the staffs of lawyers of the Barrick is now Governor: Francisco 'Paco' Pérez. And I bet that it will do its utmost so that the magemineria is permitted. And the President?
