Executive summary

Barrick is the multinational mining of the world's largest gold: has 25
operational mines and projects of exploration and development in 15 countries. The
company has several complaints about human rights violations and is
strongly resisted by local communities and environmental groups.
In Argentina account with two projects: Veladero, a gold mine and
Silver open pit located in the North of the province of San Juan, in
production since 2005 and with a service life of 14 years; and Pascua Lama, the
first bi-national mining project of the world that will explode for 21 years

they are inside the San Guillermo Biosphere reserve of UNESCO.
Barrick recognizes have changed the course of a river to avoid contaminating it.
In addition, a recent report warns the impact of pollution of
heavy metals in streams and rivers of San Juan by the company.
Mesopotamia and the Patagonian Cordillera concentrate large amounts of
water. However, about 75% of the Argentine territory is arid or semi-arid.
It is estimated that climate change will affect the availability of potable water in
the region of Cuyo, which largely depends on the melting of the Andes.
Mining affects the glaciers in the stage of exploration and exploitation, with
its removal, road construction, drilling and use of explosives, the
lifting of powder that accelerates its melting, and the coverage of the
same for scrap materials.
With more than 200 new mining projects in the central Andean region of
Argentina (only San Juan has more than 150), the cumulative impact
envelope glacial and periglacial environment can be catastrophic if not you
performs inventory stipulated by the law of glaciers.
Originally the Pascua Lama project included the transfer of three glaciers of the
Chilean side (Toro 1, Toro 2 and Esperanza), but this plan was banned and is
It forced the company to change the project to not speak them. However,

In February this year it passed to the company by continue to affect them.
In Argentina, the company was denounced by affecting the Conconta Glacier (o)
(Vallejos) through the opening of roads.
Both Veladero and Pascua Lama are located in environment
periglacial, something prohibited by the law of glaciers.
Amparo appeals by Barrick against the law of glaciers

in their undertakings and that an environmental audit is done to
Verify if it is affecting glaciers (article 15 of the law).
